The Banco de España offers training courses to professional cash handlers and retail employees. These courses explain the security features of euro banknotes and coins, the conditions for putting them into circulation and the procedures for checking their authenticity and fitness according to the Eurosystem's rules.

Based on applicants’ needs, we offer different content and learning options

  • On site and via videoconference:
    The “Euro banknotes and coins course” is aimed at cash handling professionals from banks, cash-in-transit companies, equipment manufacturers, casinos, currency-exchange bureaux and other cash handling professionals who are required to comply with regulations on the recirculation of euro banknotes and coins. Also recommended for retailers who wish to learn about the security features of banknotes and coins and the procedure to be followed if a banknote or coin is suspected to be counterfeit.
    These courses are held at the Banco de España headquarters in Madrid (Calle Alcalá, 522 and, on request, at the Banco de España branch offices located throughout the country. Sessions are also conducted by videoconference.

  • Online:
    We offer several online courses based on applicants’ profiles so that they can self pace their learning.
    • Manual sorting of cash: designed for cash handling professionals who are required to comply with regulations on the recirculation of euro banknotes and coins. It provides information on the design and security features of euro banknotes and coins, recirculation rules and what to do if a banknote or coin is suspected of being counterfeit.
    • Get to know the euro: aimed at retailers and other professionals who use cash, who want to learn about the security features of banknotes and coins, and know what to do if a banknote or coin is suspected to be counterfeit.
    • Security features and legal protection of the euro: targeted at other professionals from public institutions and security forces, among others, who need to learn about the security features of euro banknotes and coins and to be aware of the framework for the legal protection of the euro.
    • Cash in shop services: aimed at retailers who want to offer this form of cash withdrawal at their retail outlets. It provides information about the design and security features of euro banknotes and the recirculation rules required for offering this service.


All online courses include a set of final questions. If you answer more than half of the questions correctly, you can download a diploma of achievement.
