The Banco de España exchanges low denomination banknotes and coins for higher denomination ones. It also does the opposite: exchanging higher denominations for lower ones.

Individuals or entities may take damaged or defective coins to the branch offices of the Banco de España or their own bank, to have them examined and subsequently exchanged for new ones.

Individuals or entities may take defective, stained, soiled or torn euro banknotes to a Banco de España branch office or their own bank to have them examined and subsequently exchanged for new ones.

The Banco de España checks the authenticity of suspect euro banknotes and coins detected and submitted by financial institutions, firms or individuals.
