The Banco de España exchanges low denomination banknotes and coins for higher denomination ones. It also does the opposite: exchanging higher denominations for lower ones.

Start procedure

Please consider the following when using this service:

  • If you need to exchange coins, the Banco de España will accept up to 1,000 coins per person per day, if you have sorted them by denomination, and up to 200 coins per person per day if they are unsorted. The Madrid headquarters and the Barcelona, Seville and Zaragoza branch offices have special machines for exchanging up to 1,000 coins without the need to sort them.
  • If you need coins, the machines will be able to provide you with 1,000 coins in standard packaging and/or 200 loose coins.
  • In the case of banknotes, you can exchange as many as you need. If you require banknotes, the Banco de España guarantees that it will provide you with at least 100 banknotes of each denomination. However, to ensure that everyone is attended to properly, exchanging large amounts of banknotes may be restricted to a reasonable time frame and the number of operations may be limited to one per day.
