Process description

The Banco de España shall accept the exchange of euro banknotes and coins for others of a different denomination.

For the exchange of coins:

  • At reception, the Banco de España shall accept up to 2,000 coins if separated by face value or 200 coins not separated by face value. In the branches of Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Zaragoza, these operations can be carried out through the counting machines that are available without the need to present them separately at face value.
  • For delivery to the public, the limit shall be 1,000 coins in standard packaging and/or 200 coins without packaging.

The Banco de España shall require visitors to identify themselves by showing their DNI (Spanish National Identification Document), passport or residency certificate where the sum they wish to exchange is equal to or over 1,000 euros. Where the sum to exchange is less than 1,000 euros, the Banco de España may also request identification.

Euro banknotes and coins can be exchanged for others of a different denomination at the Banco de España building in Madrid (Calle Alcalá 48) or at other branches.

The opening hours for public services are from Monday to Friday from 8.30 to 14.00.
